Number one, revisited
As mentioned in my last post, my first 'from scratch' bass, aka 'Number One' was built in 2020. There have been several built since then, as well as modifications done to already existing instruments, both guitar and bass, but those are for another post. In 2023, I took early retirement and we moved 210 miles north to Lewistown, Illinois. Upon setting up my shop, the creative drive took over and I've been busy ever since, which is not a bad thing, because if I let myself get bored, strange things happen. Anyhow, back to Number One.
After five years of playing this bass, a number of things came to light: I didn't really take the time I should have with staining it, I also realized that I prefer a double cutaway body style, and the pickup placement was halfway right.
As you can see, we have a major change here. Number One is now a double cutaway, the pickups have been repositioned, and the whole shebang has been refinished.
Now, the good stuff - it still balances perfectly on my leg, so playing it sitting down is as pleasant as standing up. The tone has massively improved, with every pickup option having the classic fretless growl. And now, it looks as good as it sounds.
To sum it up, mission accomplished!
I'll be back soon with an overview of my two short scale basses and some guitar projects that crossed my workbench.
